Rapid HIV testing is effective within 28 days of potential exposure to the virus. During counseling, extensive information about the virus is given.

In addition to the rapid test, there are other tests such as the ELISA test (Antige-Antibidy) or the so-called combo and the PCR test (DNA test) which is performed in limited cases only. These tests are performed in specific laboratories for this purpose.

Symptoms may not appear upon infection, but if they do appear, they are similar to the symptoms of acute influenza and appear approximately two weeks after exposure, continue for ten days, and then disappear.
